Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

I grew up near Minneapolis, Minnesota the launching pad for some of the most influential musicians such as Bob Dylan and Prince. The state’s nickname is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” however at last check I think they are nearing 12,000. In the late 80’s, I relocated to Kansas City to pursue my dream fleet job! I love Kansas City but do miss the lakes (but not the mosquitoes).

Before working in your current position what did you do?  And what’s something most members may not know about you?

For 14 years I was a group manager of a Program Management team responsible for telecommunications technology deployment projects. In this capacity I managed large-scale nationwide deployments of telecom networks, software and technology. This was never in my career plan, I actually started my career in the automotive field after graduating from Dunwoody College of Technology – Automotive Service Technology. I guess my desire with the automotive industry to build, maintain, service and improve technology spilled over into the Telecom world.

What's your favorite part about working in fleet?

It’s about the people! There is a huge value to be placed on developing good relationships with peers, suppliers, and getting involved with industry associations such as AFLA. The knowledge that resides within the people in this industry is incredible! Not only is it important to continually learn about evolving fleet technology, I believe it is equally important to share experiences, best practices and challenges with my peers and associates as many of them may hold the key to unlock your currently challenge. Work is social.

What are three career lessons you've learned thus far?

1. Everyone's a customer - supplier, driver, peer, manager, employee, executive... everyone is a customer and can be key to your success.
2. Be open & flexible - don't be afraid to say yes even when you're thinking no. Some of my best experiences were not part of my plan!
3. Don't lose sight of your accomplishments - most of my best "feel good" times at work are when I can actually say I accomplished something. No matter how big or small, keep a list of your goals and track your progress towards them.

What are your favorite hobbies?

My wife Michele and I love to travel the countryside on my motorcycle. We are members of a very active motorcycle group in Kansas City that last year alone the members traveled over 550,000 miles. Over the last 12 months, I’ve put on nearly 12,000 miles on my motorcycle and have met some awesome people. When we are not on the motorcycle, we try to play golf. Neither one of us are very good golfers but we enjoy the challenge!
