Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in New Jersey and still live there. I now live in a town that is over 70% state park land and reservoir so it is quite wild even though I am 16 miles from NYC.
Before working in your current position what did you do? And what’s something most members may not know about you?
I ended up in fleet quite by chance, as many of us do. I was a supervisor in Accounts Payable and many departments reported up to the same director, with fleet being one of them. One day the director came and asked if I wanted to move to fleet (I had no idea what it was but I absolutely HATED A/P) and I said that I had ALWAYS wanted to work in fleet and so she moved me there. A bit of baptism by fire. So with an undergraduate degree in technical theatre arts I jumped in feet first (the smoke and mirrors, illusions of the stage easily replaced by the magic of fleet) and haven’t looked back.
What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in fleet?
Learn all you can outside of fleet. The industry covers such wide ranging topics as science, computing, finance, marketing, there is salesmanship involved, accounting, and other disciplines that the more of a polymath you are the better able you will be to address whatever new development comes around to fleet. Fleet is a bit of the canary in the coalmine in that regard. Be honest, treasure the friendships and people you will work with and enjoy yourself.
